Avery shines, Glacier sweeps at Whitefish tourney

WHITEFISH — Tyler Avery earned medalist honors and helped Glacier sweep the Whitefish Triangular golf tournament held Tuesday at Whitefish Lake Golf Course.
Avery shot a 68 to lead a 1-2 finish with teammate Sam Engellant, who fired a 74. The Wolfpack had 304 strokes to 309 for Whitefish and 351 for Flathead.
“Tyler Avery played amazing golf,” Whitefish coach Tait Rocksund said. “I watched him play a couple holes and his ball-striking was amazing. Glacier should be pretty competitive on the AA level as well this year. It was fun to square up with them. It was great, and the weather was great, and it was a great event today.”
Whitefish’s Marcus Kilman (75), Billy Smith (76) and Riley Brown (78) finished 3-4-5; Flathead’s Joston Cripe and Johnny Nix each shot 80 to tie for sixth.
Smith was coming off competing at an American Junior Golf Association tournament at Big Sky.
“Today he had some great moments in there,” Rocksund said. “A couple holes got away from him and same with Johnny Nix, I think. Sometimes that happens. I was really proud of Riley Brown today, and it was Senior Day and nice to see a senior (Kilman) shoot a nice score.”
Chloe Tanner and Stella Claridge shot 83 and 85 to lead a 2-3 finish for the Glacier girls, who finished with 379 strokes to 410 for Flathead and 428 for Whitefish.
Flathead’s Jillian Wynne was girls medalist with an 81. Teammate McKinlie Murer was fifth at 99.
Whitefish was led by Anyah Cripe, who finished fourth.
“Anyah held us down with a good 95,” Rocksund said. “I think our girls team is trending in the right direction.”
