Glacier sweeps team titles; Flathead’s Wynne is medalist
HELENA — It took a one-hole playoff but the Glacier Wolfpack completed a sweep Friday, winning the boys’ and girls’ team championships at the two-day Helena Invitational golf tournament.
Glacier won the playoff hole with two birdies — from Tyler Avery and Will Salonen — and a bogey.
Flathead’s Jillian Wynne was the girls’ medalist and led a fourth-place finish by the Bravettes with rounds of 79 and 78 at Bill Roberts Golf Course.
The Glacier girls, meanwhile, won the team title over Helena Capital by seven strokes: Chloe Tanner, who had a two-day total of 164, and Stella Claridge finished 2-4 for the Pack, and teammate Kenna Sandler was ninth.
The Wolfpack had a total of 747 while Capital had 754. All eight Western AA schools competed, though just five had full girls’ teams.
The Glacier boys had a tougher time of it, needing a playoff with Capital after both teams shot identical scores of 299 and 296 for a total of 595. The Pack’s five-some went 1-under on the extra hole while Capital was even par.
Capital’s Joe McGreevey shot a 67 Friday to overtake Salonen for medalist honors. He had 143 to 146 for Salonen and Avery, who shot a 70 on Friday. Sam Engellant of Glacier was fourth at 147.
Flathead’s Joston Cripe was eighth, firing a 73 Friday for a two-day total of 151. Next was defending State AA medalist Kade McDonough of Sentinel at 152.
The Spartans were third as a team at 607, 12 strokes behind the leaders. The Flathead boys were fourth at 635.
