Columbia Falls’ McPhee keys Montana-Western rally
DICKINSON, N.D. — Montana-Western scored three unanswered second-half touchdowns, two by Columbia Falls product Colten McPhee, and rallied past Dickinson State in an NAIA football game Saturday.
Jon Jund threw for 331 yards and four touchdowns for the Bulldogs, and Reese Neville ran for 92 yards. Western still trailed 30-21 at halftime thanks to three first-half scoring strikes from DSU quarterback Drew Boedecker.
McPhee had scoring runs covering 6 and 5 yards, wrapped around Jund’s 6-yard TD pass to Trey Mounts. That pass gave Western (2-1) of the Frontier Conference the lead for good, 35-30, with 31 seconds left in the third quarter.
After Braden Smith intercepted a Blue Hawk pass with 6:08 left, McPhee — the redshirt freshman ran 9 times for 31 yards — scored with 2:52 remaining to seal the win.
Boedecker threw for 299 yards for the Blue Hawks (0-2), who rolled up 448 yards of offense but lost four turnovers. Western had 503 yards and five turnovers, including three picks of Jund.
E. Oregon 21,
MSU-Northern 7
EUGENE, Ore. — Eastern Oregon quarterback Kai Quinn threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes and the Mountaineers beat MSU-Northern in a Frontier Conference game played at Autzen Stadium.
Quinn completed 13 of 20 passes for 129 yards with one interception; he also ran 12 times for 61 yards. John Lesser carried 29 times for 172 yards, including a 4-yard scoring run that put EOU (3-0 in the Frontier and overall) up 7-0 at halftime.
The game was originally scheduled for LaGrande, Ore., last week but postponed because of unhealthy air. Oregon officials didn’t allow fans at Autzen Saturday because of Covid-19 concerns.
The Lights (0-2, 0-2) were outgained 414-206 in total yardage. Brenden Medina completed 17 of 29 passes for 210 yards. He threw a 16-yard pass to Tyrese Rio for Northern’s lone score with 1:40 left in the game.
