Edward James Guy, 96

| September 23, 2021 12:00 AM

Edward James Guy was born June 24, 1925, in Kansas City, Kansas. He graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago and later specialized in anesthesiology at the University of Iowa. He spent two years in Korea from 1951 to 1953 as an Army surgeon caring for wounded soldiers at a battalion aid station before they were transferred further from the front line to a MASH unit. He received the bronze star for administering aid while under fire. He said this was just part of being an Army surgeon near the battle lines.

He married Sallie in July of 1953. At the conclusion of his residency in anesthesiology, he and Sallie moved to Montana as only the second anesthesiologist medical doctor in that field. He began his practice in Great Falls followed by a move to Billings until his retirement. They had six children, Peter, Mary, Martha (Don), Sarah (Ross), Jim (Lisa), and Debbie (Jeff); grandchildren, Donny, Melissa, Andrew, David, Katherine, Jacob, Hannah, Isaiah, Elizabeth, Noah, Rachel, Joshua, Annalise, Daniel, Jonathan, Grace, Caleb, Nathan, Elijah and Lydia, and five great grandchildren.

Backpacking in the Beartooth Wilderness Area was a regular summertime activity with his family. He became an avid bicyclist. He and Sallie often rode their tandem bike around many parts of Montana. Some of his cycle tours included the Beartooth Pass near Red Lodge, Yellowstone, the Swan Valley and Glacier Park areas as well. He and Sallie and their six children cycled many miles together as this became a family activity. In his older years he took up the Ragbrai challenge and rode across the state of Iowa several times as the oldest bicyclist to accomplish this feat. He continued riding a bicycle up until the last weeks of his life.

Eddie dearly loved his bride and they were married 68 years! He was loved and respected by everyone who knew him. Edward was a very kind and humble man, always interested in his family as he encouraged each of his children to work hard. He “retired” to his orchard and enjoyed teaching his family all about different types of fruit trees and all various aspects of growing fruit. He made a special point to spend time with and encourage each of his children and grandchildren as he was very proud of each of them and their different endeavors.

Edward left this earth on Sept. 12, 2021, and is safely home with his Savior, Jesus Christ. The funeral to celebrate his life will be Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. at Swan Chapel in Swan Lake.
