Flathead’s Wynne, Glacier’s Avery in second at Western AA golf

MISSOULA — Glacier’s Tyler Avery and Flathead’s Jillian Wynne went low Thursday and sit second in the individual races after one day of the Western AA Divisional golf meet, held at the Ranch Club.

Avery shot a 72 and Will Salonen a 76 as the Wolfpack ended the first day with 311 strokes, 12 behind leader Missoula Sentinel and five behind Helena Capital. Sentinel’s Joe Opitz fired a 68 to build a four-stroke lead over both Avery and Butte’s Jack Prigge.

Defending AA champion Kade McDonough of Sentinel is among three players at 74.

Wynne, meanwhile, shot 79 to sit three strokes behind first-round girls leader Kodie Hoagland of Butte. Glacier’s Chloe Tanner (82) and Stella Claridge (83) sit third and fourth and the Wolfpack is second in the team race at 387, 17 strokes behind Capital.

Flathead and Sentinel are tied for fourth at 447.

The tournament concludes Friday.
