MISSOULA — Jillian Wynne made her charge, the Glacier girls’ made theirs, though it was Butte’s Kodie Hoagland and the Helena Capital Bruins that held on for Western AA golf titles.

Hoagland led a Butte sweep of the medalist honors, following her 76 on Thursday with an 80 Friday at Ranch Club.

Butte’s Jack Prigge shot a 69 Friday, then won a one-hole playoff from Missoula Sentinel’s Kade McDonough to become the boys medalist.

Meanwhile Flathead’s Wynne, who began the day three strokes behind Hoagland, drew even on No. 16 and stayed there until bogeying the final hole while Hoagland made par.

Hoagland, who shot a 32 on her final nine on Thursday to build her lead, had a two-day total of 156. Wynne, who shot a tourney-low 78 Friday, was at 157.

“It was quite a fight,” Flathead coach Roy Antley said. “Kodie is very long, but Jill is just scrappy and she fights for every stroke. She made a lot of big putts to get even with her, and came up just a little short on that last hole.”

Glacier’s Chloe Tanner (162) and Stella Claridge (167) finished third and fourth and fueled a run at Capital for the team title.

“I’m proud of the way our girls fought back,” Glacier coach Doug Manaker said. “Chloe and Stella played very well, and the playoff of Kenna (Sandler) and Collette (Daniels) nearly allowed us to erase a big deficit.”

The Pack was 17 strokes off the pace coming into Friday, but Sandler (97) improved by four strokes over Thursday and Daniels (103) by 18.

Capital also won the boys’ team crown, rallying from five strokes back to beat Sentinel by five.

Dutch Teders shot a 71 to lead the Bruins; he finished third. McDonough shot a 71 for Sentinel, though many of the Spartans went higher the second day.

Glacier’s boys were third at 623, 18 strokes behind Capital. Tyler Avery finished sixth with a two-day total of 148, five strokes off the lead. Sam Engellent shot a 76 Friday to move into 10th, and Keaton Cassidy (160) was 14th.

Will Salonen ended up in a tie for 18th.

“Tyler played some great golf,” Manaker said. “If a couple putts fall for him, he would have been right there for the top spot.

“We wanted to come here and defend our boys’ divisional title and win one for the girls. But the goal all season long is still ahead of us. Hopefully we learn from this and improve. We want to be playing our best golf next week at state.”

The top four teams at divisional qualify for the State AA, which is Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Cottonwood Hills near Bozeman. The Glacier boys and girls and Flathead girls qualified; the Flathead boys didn’t, but all five golfers go because they placed in the top 10 individuals who weren’t on the top four teams.

Tyler Williams finished 20th to lead the Braves; he shot 84-82 for a 166 total. Joston Cripe (21st, 168) was next and Drew Lowry, Korbin Hawley and Kadin Gall all shot 175-178.
