Walburn third in Group B at Bryan Clay decathlon

AZUSA, Calif. — Whitefish product and Carroll College standout Lee Walburn completed a couple solid days of competition by finishing third in his decathlon group at the Bryan Clay Invitational meet Thursday.

Walburn, a junior, scored 7,156 points, with a fourth-place finish in the 1,500 meters — the 10th and final event — pushing him up from fourth place to third overall in Group B.

Walburn won the discus throw for Group B, throwing 133 feet,11 inches, was second in the javelin (183-110) and third in the shot put (43-2 ½). On Friday he ran his personal best time in the 400: 50.92 seconds.

Winning Group B was Britain’s Sam Talbot, who was competing unattached and scored 7,643 points; Oregon’s Nathan Poff was second at 7,318.

Eight athletes completed all 10 events in Group B; 12 did so in Group A, with Oregon’s Max Vollmer scoring 8,022 points; Cal-State Fullerton’s Andrew Aguilar topped 11 athletes in Group C with 6,714 points.

Overall Walburn had the ninth-highest total, while setting the Carroll College record and surpassing his total from last May’s NAIA Championships (7,095).

Carroll’s next action is the Trudnowski Open back in Helena Thursday. The Frontier Conference Championships are April 26-27 in Great Falls.
