Big Sky reining classic Aug. 10 at Majestic Valley Arena

| August 4, 2022 11:55 PM

The Annual Big Sky Reining Classic hosted by the Montana Reining Horse Association is the largest reining horse show in the Northwest and is being held this year Aug. 10-14 at the Majestic Valley Arena in Kalispell.

The purpose of the BSRC is to provide reiners the opportunity to show their horses at a premiere event in the great state of Montana. Reiners from around the Pacific NW, Canada and the Mountain Region travel to our beautiful state to compete for over $45,000 in cash and prizes in this challenging and popular sport.

This event is a perfect example of Montana culture, displaying the skill and athleticism of the western ranch horse in a competitive environment.

Reining is an equine competition in which riders guide highly trained horses through precise patterns of large and small circles, flying lead changes, spins, rollbacks, sliding stops and

other maneuvers that highlight the athleticism of the western horse. Except for spins, all maneuvers are performed at a lope or a full gallop. Riders are required to wear western attire and use a western saddle and tack.

The competition, which requires the horse and rider to work as a coordinated team, is

judged according to strict standards established by the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA).

All levels of horsemanship and any age can participate in the show. There are non-professional riders and open/professional riders that will show each day.

The highlight of our show will be the Futurity and Derby classes on Friday and Saturday night. The Futurity is for 3-year-old horses that are just starting the sport of reining. The Derby is for 4 to 7-year-old horses that are in the prime of their ability.

Nothing beats watching the talent of these animals, spinning and sliding to a stop with ease, grace and skill. Admission is free to the public. Come support the Montana Reining Horse Association at the Big Sky Reining Classic.
