Glacier Park announces 2022-2023 Artists-in-Residence
Glacier National Park has chosen the Artists-in-Residence for summer 2022 and 2023.
The program offers professional artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the park’s inspiring landscape. Each artist will pursue their work while in the park, and then engage and inspire the public through multiple outreach programs. Public programs will be related to their experience as the Artist-in-Residence and historically have been demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks or performances.
Artists for the summer of 2022 are:
• Ilana Goldman and Gabriel Williams (June 6 to July 1) — Goldman and Williams are dancers, choreographers, educators and filmmakers who create short dance films in spectacular natural environments. Their work centers around humankind’s relationship to nature and its influence on our identity. They have created three short films together, which have screened at over 30 international film festivals and venues. They will create a short dance film in Glacier Park, which will diverge from their other films by investigating humans’ impact on nature. They will specifically be addressing the plastic trash crisis, with Goldman wearing a costume made from the plastic trash, which she generated over a four-month period.
• Rosalyn Gerstein (July 5 to July 30) — Gerstein is a portraitist who uses oil painting and documentary photography to capture the relationships between people and their environment. She often exhibits her work with interview quotes from her subjects to give them a voice. She plans to spend her residency portraying the park stewards who have dedicated their lives to preserving public lands for future generations and exploring their motivation for carrying on this meaningful work. Gerstein has lectured, published and exhibited extensively, and taught art and creative expression to students ages 4 to 94.
The artists selected to participate in the Summer 2023 Artist-in-Residence program are Virginia Catherall, arriving in June, and Benjamin Rusnak and Susan Bryant, arriving in July. Catherall is a knitting and textile artist whose work is inspired by the landscapes of the West, and Rusnak and Bryant are a photographer and writer team who offer a dialogue about experiencing and protecting wild places within ourselves and the transformative power of nature.

The Glacier landscape has long inspired art and expression, from traditional dances and stories, to serving as a summer residence and source of creativity for the famous painter Charlie Russell. In present day, art in the park continues in the form of the Artist-in-Residence program, countless art workshops held in and around the park, and with thousands of visitors who come each year bringing easels, cameras, and other tools to capture the beauty around them. Art inspired by Glacier regularly appears in both local and worldwide gallery shows and museums.
