Whitefish girls, boys sitting third at State A track
BUTTE — Brooke Zetooney and Hailey Ells finished neck-and-neck in their one final on Friday at the State A track and field championships. No surprise there.
What maybe was a surprise is that Corvallis sophomore Olivia Lewis won the 400 meters, in 59.01 seconds at Bulldog Memorial Stadium. Zetooney, a sophomore, passed her teammate at the end to take second at 59.51. Ells, a senior, ran 59.59.
“I’m a little bummed about my time, but I’m really proud of Brooke,” Ells, who ran the fastest 200 trials Friday while Zetooney cranked out a personal best in the 100 trials (12.41). “And Olivia as well. They ran really well.”
Hardin leads the team race after six events, with 34 points — mainly because of the 1,600, where Mariah Aragon led a 1-3-4 finish. Corvallis has 30 points, and Whitefish has 24.
The Bulldogs are about where they figured to be after Day 1. A fifth state crown remains in reach.
“I sure hope we can get there,” Ells said. “Us and Laurel (fourth with 22 points), I think it’s going to be pretty close. But I think our determination will pull us through. I’m excited to see what happens.”
Whitefish saw Isabelle Cooke take fourth in the 800, and Erin Wilde take third in the long jump. Dillon standout Ainsley Shipman won the latter, knocking off defending champion Rileigh McGree of Butte Central. Shipman’s time in the 100 hurdles trials was, for the record, 15.17.
Columbia Falls has 12 points, good for seventh. They all came Thursday, when Hannah Sempf led a 2-4-6 finish in the pole vault, with Emma McAllister and Rebekah Walker.
Defending boys champion Hamilton seems set. Colter Kirkland repeated as 800 champ. Teammate Lane Cole was trying for a repeat in the 3,200, but was beaten by Corvallis junior Brinson Wyche. The Broncs’ Taylor Searle won the pole vault, and Andrew Burrows uncorked a throw of 166 feet, 9 inches to win the discus.
Hamilton had 59 points to 41 for Dillon and 19 for Whitefish.
Dillon’s Treyton Anderson breezed to the 400 title and ran the best 110 hurdles trial by far: 14.40 seconds. Next was Laurel’s Wesley Tschacher, at 15.58.
The Locomotives Jakob Webinger fastest through the 100 and 200 trials. Whitefish had the fastest trial run in the short relay: 49.57.
Whitefish senior Talon Holmquist was third in the discus; Deneb Linton took third in the 3,200.
Bonus Bulldog points came from Gabe Menicke who — running out of the first “slow” heat — clocked 50.91 in the 400 to take third.
Bodie Smith was sixth in the long jump.
Columbia Falls got a third place from Bryce Dunham in the javelin; Libby’s Dawson Rose took third in the pole vault.
