Cawdrey Gallery hosts two artists for Gallery Night
Cawdrey Gallery in Whitefish hosts its final Gallery Night of 2022, “An Evening of Glass and Light,” with artists Grace Chepenik of Seattle and Ann Justin of Bozeman, from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 6. The artists have brought new works and will be available for questions about their process. Charcuterie, wine and spirits will be served. The gallery is located at 206 Lupfer Ave.
About Grace Chepenik
Grace Chepenik has studied at the prestigious Pilchuck Studio founded by Dale Chihuly outside of Seattle. Her home base is Washington, D.C. She graduated in the spring 2021 from the University of Miami as a Foote Fellow honor student with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture and painting.
“These vases are representations of the winding journey I have recently been experiencing, Chepenik said. “These pieces were made at Pilchuck Glass School, which prompted my travel to see and experience the country. It has been the trip of a lifetime and, while some parts of the journey were daunting, I turned to the sky in each state for comfort. It made the world seem familiar knowing I was looking under, nearly, the same sky.
“During my time at Pilchuck, I got to learn new color application processes. I wanted to use this skill to create folding and intertwined patterns on the vessels to tell this story of my journey. The colors reiterate the familiarity of a welcoming sky.”
About Ann Justin
Ann Justin studied at the Yale School of Drama, turning her studies to costume design on Broadway and for the Lincoln Center. After a vacation in Montana, she began to study working with pastels and now specializes in portraiture, Native American figures, and painting Glacier National Park.
“Now as a fine art pastelist, I paint beautiful landscapes “en plein air,” searching out intimate scenes with interesting features, capturing vibrant colors and light that are present here,” Justin said. “I also paint when I travel, enjoying the diverse beauty, and the chance to look and appreciate a scene for an extended period of time. I love painting out of door, as it is a challenge to nail the fleeting light, the depth of space, and the subtle colors. And the West is filled with beauty!”
