Smith, Whitefish take slim leads over Avery, Glacier

Billy Smith shot a 68 and Whitefish took a narrow lead in the team race after the first day of the Kalispell Invitational golf tournament, held at Northern Pines Wednesday.

Smith holds a one-stroke lead over Glacier’s Tyler Avery, who shot 69; Whitefish team total of 300 sits one stroke better than Glacier’s 301.

Helena Capital’s Joe McGreevey shot 71 to sit third; Whitefish golfer Johnny Nix is alone in fourth after a 72.

The Bulldogs also had a 78 from Riley Brown. Behind Avery, Glacier had a 74 from Trevor Cunningham, a 78 from Jonah Wynne and an 80 from Tanyon Murray.

Flathead, sitting seventh, had matching 75s from Dylan Morris and Nick Dubois.

Polson took a commanding 23-stroke lead in the girls team race, with two players in the top 15: Ashley Maki (82, third) and Clare Konen (92).

Anna Stensrud of Missoula Hellgate fired a first-round 75 to build a four-stroke lead over Glacier’s Chloe Tanner (79).

The tournament concludes today at Buffalo Hill.
