Bravettes third at MCPS Invite
MISSOULA — The Flathead Bravettes are making strides, if a third-place finish at Saturday’s MCPS Invitational track and field meet is any indication.
Defending State AA champion Helena won the large, multi-class meet with 92.5 points; Missoula Hellgate was second with 84 and Flathead had 81 points.
Sentinel (74.5), Corvallis (65) and defending A champion Whitefish (64.5) finished 4-5-6 among the girls teams.
There were, not surprisingly, some excellent times. Helena’s Logan Todorovich won the girls 100 in a time of 12.69 seconds; right behind at 12.70 were Brooke Zetooney of Whitefish and Claire Hutchison of Stevensville.
Zetooney later ran the fastest 200 in the state regardless of class: 25.99 seconds. Her teammate, Hailey Ells, clocked 26.16 and Ally Sempf at Columbia Falls came across in 26.17.
Todorovich clipped through the 100-meter hurdles in a state-best 15.37, while Corvallis standout Olivia Lewis came across in a Class A-best 15.70 — followed by Flathead’s Alivia Rinehart at 16.05, the third-best time in Class AA.
Lewis (45.75) and Ells (47.38) then went 1-2 in the 300 hurdles; that puts them first and third in the state regardless of class.
Flathead ran the second-fastest long relay of the spring, winning in 4:10.63. The Bravettes also had Bailey Wride (2:25.25, a PR) take third in the 800 and Lilli Rumsey Eash finish second in the 1,600.
Tali Miller was third in the javelin for Flathead, and Akilah Kubi was third in the long jump.
Helena’s Madilyn Todorovich became the third girl to clear 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump while winning a battle with Sentinel’s Ava Kellenberg, Hutchison of Stevi and Flathead’s Kennedy Moore. All three made 5-2; Moore cleared 5-4 on Tuesday.
Helena’s boys outscored Helena Capital 89-88 to complete a sweep; Missoula Big Sky was third at 71.5. Flathead’s boys scored 50 points for seventh.
Columbia Falls junior Malaki Simpson won the 100 meters in 11.05 seconds, the best in Class A. The Wildcats also saw Adam Schrader take over the best time in the 300 hurdles for Class A (41.84). They ran the fourth-best 400 relay in A as well, clocking 44.14 seconds, and Lane Voermans PR’d in the discus with a throw of 144-9, third in A.
Next in the 100 was Owen Hoag of Class C Seeley-Swan at 11.09; Hogan later ran the fastest 200 in the state this spring, at 22.11.
State bests were also set in the pole vault (Hamilton’s Taylor Searle, 14-7), high jump (Helena’s Aayden Simmons, 6-6) and javelin (Levi Reynoso of Corvallis, 183-0).
Leading Flathead was Brody Thornsberry, who went 21-6 to win the long jump. Teammate Jackson Walker took second in the 400, running in 52.71 seconds; Kasen Kastner’s time of 2:01.37 in the 800 was a PR; the dual of Jacob Dolezal (41-4) and Stephan Riley (41-3) finished 4-5 in a tight triple jump competition.
Whitefish senior Nate Inglefinger ran 2:02.93 in a fast 800, and sits third in Class A.
