Last Saturday was balmy, but Sunday was good enough and the Kalispell AA Lakers took advantage of the weather to split the first two games of their American Legion baseball season.

The Missoula Mavericks came to Griffin Field and, with temperatures hanging around 50 degrees, picked up a 12-8 win thanks to a 9-run fifth inning. The Lakers then put up a five-spot in the sixth inning to cool off the Mavericks, 9-8, splitting the doubleheader.

In the loss, Kalispell’s Carter Schlegel had three hits including a double, and Andre Cephers and Nate Skonard each scored twice.

In Sunday’s win Adam Nikunen drew four walks and scored twice; the Lakers were issued 12 walks overall. Cephers doubled, drove in two and scored twice, and Timmy Glanville and Ostyn Brennan each had a double and two hits.

Nikunen also got the win on the mound, coming on in the sixth inning as the Mavs built an 8-4 lead. He got four outs and the decision.

The AA Lakers’ next action is a doubleheader with the Havre Northstars Saturday at 3 p.m. at Griffin Field. They then play the Cranbrook Bandits two games Sunday starting at 1 p.m.

The A Lakers begin their season Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. against the Great Falls Chargers; they play a twinbill with the Northstars Sunday at noon.

A season preview will run in Friday’s Inter Lake.
