Wachholz brings mix of performers to the stage
The Wachholz College Center brings a variety of musical performances to the stage this month from cello and piano to the soulful Delta swamp blues and Mardi Gras Indian funk.
On Aug. 3, the Portland Cello Project will present an intimate performance of enchanting melodies and powerful harmonies of past and present.
The Portland Cello Project features a “revolving cast of cellists” performing, recording and educating around the nation under the artistic direction of Douglas Jenkins. Well established by 2009, the group was performing “anywhere and everywhere,” from punk rock clubs and street parties to symphony halls and private events — bringing the cello into the spotlight.
Tickets range in price from $25 to $35. The performance starts at 7:30 p.m.
On Aug. 11, audiences are invited to spend an evening with classically trained pianist Holly Bowling, whose recent work has encompassed arranging music of bands such as Phish and the Grateful Dead for piano.
Whether she’s performing on “a windswept mountainous cliff” or at Carnegie Hall, Bowling subverts convention with virtuosic playing, emotional immersion, and a thirst for invention.
Ticket prices range from $16.50 to $22. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.
On Aug. 27, Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and blues guitarist Tab Benoit takes the stage with opening act The Rumble, a New Orleans-based band.
Benoit has built a music career spanning more than 30 years on the foundation of his gritty and soulful Delta swamp blues. Along the way, he’s earned five Blues Music Awards — which includes being named BB King Entertainer of the Year twice — and was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
The Rumble, which features six Grammy-nominated musicians, is more than just a band — it’s an experience into a unique aspect of Mardi Gras traditional culture known as the Mardi Gras Indians. On Mardi Gras morning, onlookers may feast on the intricate beadwork of Mardi Gras Indian attire as participants dance down the street, but the first thing people will hear is the back line, known as “the rumble,” according to the band’s bio.
Ticket prices range from $39 to $50.
Tickets may be purchased at www.wachholzcollegecenter.org or at the Wachholz ticket office, 795 Grandview Drive in Kalispell. Service fees may apply. For more information visit wachholzcollegecenter.org or call 756-1400.
