Range Riders drop 2 of 3 in Boise

BOISE, Idaho — A flurry of extra-base hits in a six-run fifth inning carried Boise past the Glacier Range Riders Sunday 10-5 and gave the Hawks the edge in this three-game Pioneer League series.

The Hawks (10-14 this half) trailed 4-1 before Anthony Walters led off their fifth with a solo homer; Trevor Minder followed with an RBI triple, Raymond Gil singled home Minder and then Derek Maiben added a two-run triple for a 7-4 lead.

Mason Dinesen’s single scored Dean Miller in the eighth inning and cut Boise’s lead to 7-5, but the Range Riders (9-14) got no closer.

Miller had a two-run home run, his eighth, in the first inning for Glacier, and Gabe Howell added one of his own — his team-leading 15th — in the top of the fifth for that 4-1 lead.

The Range Riders won the middle game of the series on Saturday, 11-9. Boise won the opener on Friday 8-5.

Glacier continues its road trip Tuesday, with the first of six games at Idaho Falls. The trip actually will last 11 games — the Range Riders have a doubleheader in Great Falls on Aug. 21, making up two games rained out in late May.

Glacier then starts a six-game home series with the Missoula PaddleHeads on Tuesday, Aug. 22,at Glacier Bank Park.

Range Riders 11, Hawks 9

Colin Gordon drove in four runs, the last with a fielder’s choice grounder in the ninth inning that capped the scoring.

Justin Coleman then struck out the side in the ninth for his seventh save.

Jackson Raper’s three-run double put Glacier up 5-0 in the fourth inning, and Dean Miller’s second RBI double of the game made it 9-3 in the sixth.

Gordon hit RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings and added an RBI double in the seventh. Gabe Howell doubled twice — the Range Riders hit eight doubles total.

Starting pitcher Noah Barros (7-3) went five innings, allowing four hits, four walks and three earned runs. He struck out six. Five relievers split the remaining innings, with Roy Robless also striking out the side in the eighth after Boise had closed to 10-9.

Friday

Hawks 8, Range Riders 5

Glacier led 2-0 and 3-2 before the Hawks pulled away with two runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Gabe Howell doubled, hit his 14th homer and drove in three runs. Mason Dinesen had a pair of doubles among three hits; Christian Kirtley had a double and Colin Gordon socked his first home run as a Range Rider, a solo shot in the eighth. It was the 11th of the season for the former Grand Junction Jackalope.
