Ryggs Johnston falls in US Amateur match play
CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. — Ryggs Johnston, the Libby product and Arizona State golfer, lost his Round of 32 match at the US Amateur Championship Wednesday, 1-up.
Like his Tuesday victory in the Round of 64, which lasted three extra holes, Johnston’s match with Auburn golfer Carson Bacha was back-and-forth. Johnston was 1-up after birdieing No. 1, was one down after six, drew even on No. 8 and then was two down going to 12.
He birdied that par-3, as well as the par-3 15th and par-4 16th to draw even; the match was decided when Bacha made bogey on 18 while Johnston made double-bogey. He shot an even-par 71 at Cherry Hills Country Club.
Wacha then fell in the Round of 16 to Jose Islas, a Mexico native and University of Oregon golfer, 3 and 2.
