Wolfpack storms away from Flathead in Crosstown Cup

The 2023 Crosstown Cup beat the weather, kind of, and the Glacier Wolfpack golfers beat Flathead in the annual Ryder Cup-style event at Village Greens.

Glacier coach Chris Michno was a little surprised at the final tally — the Pack outscored the Braves and Bravettes 20.5-6.5 — as there were some tight matches through singles play and two matches halved in two-person best ball.

“My favorite part is Flathead came right at us,” Michno, whose boys won both their stroke-play tournaments coming in. “They were ready for a good old crosstown brawl. It’s also good to see that our boys and girls played well.

“I truly believe in these kids, but I was a little surprised by the results. But I know they’re all competitors.”

A thunderstorm rumbled in just as singles matches were finishing up between Glacier’s Sam Engellant and Flathead’s Dylan Morris, and Glacier’s Trevor Cunningham and Flathead’s Tyler Williams.

“Our last group was on 18, and I saw two bolts of lightning,” Michno said. “Devoid of any lightning detection system, I just said, ‘Let’s go.’”

Morris was 1-up on Engellant and Cunningham was 1-up on Williams. Williams and Morris also teamed up to halve their best ball match with Engellant and Cunningham.

Flathead also had singles wins from Kyrie Gislason and Kyler Christie and halved another; the rest was all Pack. Glacier picked up 14.5 points there.

“I was really happy for Abbi Townsend and Maci Hoffenbacker,” Michno said of the Glacier tandem, which won its best-ball match 2 and 1 and then ended their singles matches early. “They won all their points.”
