Area schools compete in three speech and debate tournaments
It was a busy weekend for area high schools competing in different speech and debate tournaments in Helena and Frenchtown on Dec. 1 and 2.
In Helena, Flathead High School brought home the Capital High School Valley of Gold Tournament trophy with 121 points overall, followed by Glacier High School in third place with 84 points.
Carroll College hosted a debate-only tournament with Glacier placing second with 72.5 points overall. Flathead came in fourth with 47.5 points.
At the Frenchtown Bronc Invitational, Columbia Falls High School earned first with 166 overall points, continuing its undefeated season. Whitefish High School came in third with 96 points. Glacier’s junior varsity team placed fifth with 48 points overall (but ranked first among competing Class AA schools). Flathead’s junior varsity team placed seventh overall with 31 points.
The teams will compete in Kalispell on Dec. 8 at the Class AA Western Regional Tournament at Flathead and Glacier. The tournament starts at 2 p.m. Volunteer judges are still needed. To judge, register at www.kalispellspeechdebate.org or call coordinator Kyla Niva at 751-3500 extension 3577.
