Whitefish Theatre Company holds auditions for ‘Evelyn In Purgatory’

The Whitefish Theatre Co. is holding auditions for a spring production of “Evelyn In Purgatory” at 7 p.m. on Feb. 16 and 17, at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish.

Arrive early to fill out an audition application and review the script. Enter at the north side of the building near the conference room.

When a complaint is filed against one of the 70,000 teachers in New York’s public schools, they are sent to a Reassignment Center, an empty office in the Department of Education Building. They must wait for their case to be reviewed, often for months and sometimes for over a year. A claim of improper behavior by a failing student lands Evelyn Reid in “the rubber room,” where she encounters a group of teachers, some guilty, some not, who have long since lost any hope of returning to a classroom. Over the course of the school year, these colleagues learn French, workshop a screenplay and ultimately form an unlikely alliance, reminding each other of forgotten passions and emerging to face life outside in unexpected new directions. Called “The Breakfast Club for teachers”, “Evelyn In Purgatory” is “an uncommonly funny, smart and restrained commentary on the public education system.”

The cast is composed of four women, ages 20 to 70, two men, ages 20 to 50s and one male or female character of any age. No experience is necessary and no preparation is required for the audition. For those who would like to familiarize themselves with the script, it is available at the theatre and valley public libraries.

Kim Krueger is the director for the production. Rehearsals begin Feb. 20 and will be held Monday through Friday from 6 or 7 p.m. to 9 or 10 p.m. There are seven performances over two weekends on April 6-8 and April 12-15.
