FHS theater brings classic ‘Little Women’ to stage

| February 16, 2023 12:00 AM

Telling tales of love, laughter and loss, Flathead High School Theatre presents the heartwarming classic “Little Women.”

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s time-honored novel, “Little Women” the heartwarming classic spans several years and locations across the world. This stage adaptation, written by Thomas Hischak, is sure to please fans of the novel and the newer movie adaptations of “Little Women,” as well as those audience members that have no familiarity with the story.

The show plays Feb. 23, 24 and 25 at 6:27 p.m. in the David M. Hashley Theater at FHS.

The play follows the lives of four young ladies of unique abilities, qualities and temperaments who are being guarded and guided by their mother, whom they affectionately call Marmi. Staying loyal to the original story, the show highlights some of the most memorable moments of the novel while depicting the March girls coming of age and finding romance, while growing into women and finding independence.

“‘Little Women’ is a heart-warming tale about sisterhood and the ever-changing seasons of life,” said director April Williams. “The story revolves around the relationships and life experiences of four dear sisters who each have a part to play in their family life — helping Marmi, writing stories to share, playing the piano, teaching, play-acting, and even growing up. The sisters move onto their own adventures as they grow into adulthood; Amy travels to Paris, Jo experiences New York as a young writer, and more than one of them ends up falling in love.”

“This is a great show for families and it is especially sweet for mothers, daughters, grandmothers and, of course, sisters!” added Williams. “This story holds such nostalgia for so many of us, I hope the audience is brought back to the time they first came to know and love ‘Little Women.’”

Williams takes inspiration from her own family and siblings as the cast explores the idea of family and the sister connections in “Little Women.”

“I have had a great experience with this show! I have three sisters myself and it is incredibly sentimental and special for me to help bring this story to life,” said Williams. “The balance of fun and friendship between our own March sisters has been so natural since the first rehearsal.”

Through the rehearsal process, the cast members continue to gain energy from each other as well as the iconic scenes of the show.

“The cast has had a lot of fun putting together a ballroom scene, complete with fancy dresses, waltzing, and little girls stealing a glimpse of it all,” said Williams. “The relationships and adventures in ‘Little Women’ are timeless; it has been my pleasure to watch the cast discover the sweet moments of joy and sadness woven into Louise May Alcott's story.”

The cast of “Little Women” includes: Bethany Nairn, Gracyne Johnson, Ali Putzler, Samara Hackley, Lou Corbett, Athena Wallace, Danica Luehr, Adina Lockwood, Meagan Lindsay, Keelan Moore, Jax Stebbins-Han, Lily Amundson, Mackenzie Murray, Nalani Sullivan, Fallon Maas, Abbi O’Connell, Andrew Johnson, Peyton Bicha, Grant Westover, Bayliss Cummings, Ian Lawson-Sanderlin and Ryan Kitzmiller.
