Flathead grapplers in lead at Rocky Mountain Classic

MISSOULA — After the first day of action at the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic wrestling tournament, Flathead leads the field of teams with Billings West not far behind.

Flathead has a 30.5 point lead on the Broncs with 131 points. Havre is next with 105.5 and Sheridan (WY) is fourth. Columbia Falls sits in ninth, and Glacier is in 14th.

The Braves have eight going into Saturday’s semifinals, including Diesel Thompson (113), Dane Lake (138), Logan Stansberry (145), Gabe Lake (160), Anders Thompson (170) and Noah Poe-Hatten (182).

“We put eight in the semifinals, which is outstanding,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said. “We lost a couple matches that sting a little bit, but we had a tough week of practice. You could tell that the guys’ legs were a little dead. Overall that’s a really good day. The Rocky is really loaded.”

Glacier has Teegan Vasquez (132) headed to semifinals. Justin Windauer (152) and Brandon Role (182) of Columbia Falls also advanced to semis.

“This is one of those tournaments where the Flathead Braves always want to do well,” Thompson said. “It’s probably the most popular tournament outside of the state tournament. It’s one where we always want to do well and put on a great show. It’s a big one.”
