BOISE, Idaho — A five-run deficit was doable, but a 9-1 hole was too much for the Glacier Range Riders to climb out of Tuesday, in a 10-7 Pioneer League loss to the Boise Hawks.

Kole Kaler’s second-inning grand slam put the Hawks (18-13) up 5-0, and Kaler singled in a run to start a 4-run fourth inning as well. Casey Dykstra’s 2-run single capped that four-run rally to make it 9-1 and the Range Riders (17-12) couldn’t quite close the gap.

Gabe Howell, who in the third inning hit his fourth homer, singled in a run in the sixth as Glacier cut the gap to 9-4. Crews Taylor hit his fifth homer, a solo shot, to draw his team to 9-5 in the seventh.

Three walks before a 2-run single by Dean Miller cut the gap to 10-7 and brought the tying run to the play with nobody out in the eighth inning. A double play grounder and a strikeout squelched that rally, and Boise reliever Nate Alexander struck out three Range Riders in the ninth for his second save.

Mason Dinesen stole three bases for the Range Riders, giving him nine on the season. Howell, who scored three times, stole one base and is the PL co-leader with 16 thefts.

The teams battled again Wednesday, the second of a three-game set.
