| May 11, 2023 12:00 AM

Step in time for the grand musical adventure of “Mary Poppins Jr.,” brought to life at Somers Middle School.

Performances are Friday, May 12, at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday, May 13, at 2 p.m., with performances continuing for a second week of shows on May 19 at 6:30 p.m. and May 20 at 2 p.m.

In its sixth season, Somers Middle School Theater presents the story illuminating one family’s struggle to bring out the best in one another.

Seeking a new footing amid society’s upper crust in Edwardian London, George and Winifred Banks (Colin Lincoln and Melody Hantz) struggle to rein in their rebellious children (Giovanna Dragon and Hunter Mitchell), who want more from their distracted parents. After a domestic mutiny, a new, mysterious nanny (Anna Bain) takes up the family’s help-wanted notice and, with whimsy and magic, turns the family’s lives upside down. Challenging the children to see beyond appearances, Mary Poppins and a magical assortment of companions (Madi Bain, Aubrielle Hanson, Noelle Morrison, and Alexa Correll) open their eyes to the possibilities of their imagination. Meanwhile, George’s soft heart seems likely to sink the family’s fortunes until he learns the true value of an investment.

Packed with energy and the classics “Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Step in Time,” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” the play is sure to delight fans of the movie and new audiences alike.

Additional roles are played by Viola Louden, Ellie Norton, Rose Ford, Hadley McDonald, Londyn Hutcherson, Cruz Pettymyers, Nolan Shaffer, Savannah Hutcherson, Kylie Stednitz, Jade Marr, Emma Feeney, Hollis Tuffly, Addie Rivera, Lily McCauley, and Tucker Sincavage. Alex Lard and Destry Lehman run lights and sound, respectively.

Although numerous hours and countless spoonfuls of energy have been put into this captivating show, the student performers and crew have learned more valuable lessons than how to act or manage lights.

“The things I enjoy most about theater are all of the teamwork and kindness,” said fifth-grader Londyn Hutcherson.

“What I enjoy most about theater is the closeness of it. In theater, everyone is family,” added eighth grader Alexa Correll.

“My favorite part of theater so far has been being able to work with experienced actors and being a part of something fun and cool. Each day I look forward to singing and working together with friends,” commented fifth-grader Aubrielle Hanson.
