Get ready to get “Step in Time” along with Somers Middle School students in the theater program’s presentation of “Mary Poppins Jr.,” May 19 and 20.

“Mary Poppins Jr.,” will bring audiences on an adventure, as a magical — and sensible — nanny shows up to help a struggling family bring out the best in one another

Seeking a new footing amid society’s upper crust in Edwardian London, George and Winifred Banks (Colin Lincoln and Melody Hantz) struggle to rein in their rebellious children (Giovanna Dragon and Hunter Mitchell), who want more from their distracted parents. After a domestic mutiny, a new and mysterious nanny takes up the family’s help-wanted notice and turns the family’s lives upside down with a bit of whimsy and magic. Challenging the children to see beyond appearances, Mary Poppins (Anna Bain) and a magical assortment of companions (Madi Bain, Aubrielle Hanson, Noelle Morrison, and Alexa Correll) open their eyes to the possibilities of their imagination. Meanwhile, George’s soft heart seems likely to sink the family’s fortunes until he learns the true value of an investment.

“Mary Poppins Jr.” is packed with classic songs such as “Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Step in Time,” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.”

Additional roles are played by Viola Louden, Ellie Norton, Rose Ford, Hadley McDonald, Londyn Hutcherson, Cruz Pettymyers, Nolan Shaffer, Savannah Hutcherson, Kylie Stednitz, Jade Marr, Emma Feeney, Hollis Tuffly, Addie Rivera, Lily McCauley, and Tucker Sincavage. Alex Lard and Destry Lehman run lights and sound, respectively.

Although numerous hours and countless spoonfuls of energy have been put into this captivating show, the student performers and crew have learned more valuable lessons than how to act or manage lights.

“The things I enjoy most about theater are all of the teamwork and kindness,” fifth-grader Londyn Hutcherson said.

“What I enjoy most about theater is the closeness of it. In theater, everyone is family,” added eighth grader Alexa Correll.

“My favorite part of theater so far has been being able to work with experienced actors and being a part of something fun and cool. Each day I look forward to singing and working together with friends,” fifth-grader Aubrielle Hanson said.

Join the jolly holiday at 6:30 p.m. May 19 and 2 p.m. May 20 at Somers Middle School, 315 School Addition Road. Contact the front office at 857-3661 for ticket availability.
