Playoff rematch?
The Grizzlies and Bobcats are both seeded in the top six into the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, and yes there is a possible semifinal matchup.
That’s the biggest takeaway from this corner of the world’s Selection Sunday, other than the UC Davis Aggies somehow didn’t hold up to the selection committee’s candling.
The team the Aggies just beat 31-21 Saturday, Sacramento State, held up. The Hornets — who finished one game behind the Aggies and in sixth place in the Big Sky Conference, going 4-4 in league games — will play at North Dakota Saturday.
It’s the second straight year Davis finished 5-3 in league games and got passed over for the playoffs. Last year Montana was one of the last teams in, after going 4-4 in league. The Grizzlies and Aggies did not play during that season, which saw five Big Sky teams make the playoffs.
This year four made it. Montana (second), MSU (sixth) and Idaho (fourth) are seeded and have byes through the first round. Montana moved up thanks in part to Furman’s loss to Wofford Saturday; the Paladins are still the No. 7 seed and could wind up playing the Griz, who just beat the Bobcats 37-7 in the 122nd Brawl of the Wild.
Idaho (8-3) sits on the opposite side of the bracket from Montana and MSU, and will take on the winner between Nicholls and Southern Illinois on Dec. 2.
That same day the Cats (8-3) have a 3 p.m. home game against either Drake or North Dakota State. At 7 p.m. the Griz (10-1) will play host to either Lafayette or Delaware.
If the Bobcats and Grizzlies were each to win two more games, they would have a semifinal rematch at Washington-Grizzly Stadium the weekend of Dec. 15-16.
