Bobcats run wild in win over Vikings
BOZEMAN — Sean Chambers accounted for four touchdowns and Montana State overcame a slow start to beat Portland State 38-22 Saturday, and extend their home winning streak to 23 games.
With Tommy Mellott sidelined for the third straight game, Chambers got the start under center and was an efficient 14 of 21 passing for 143 yards and three touchdowns.
He also broke loose for an 88-yard touchdown rumble with 9:51 to play in the third that sparked a run of 18 unanswered points for the Bobcats.
The Montana State rushing attack racked up 313 yards on 30 carries. Chambers ended up with 118 yards on just four runs and running back Jared White piled up 102 yards on 10 carries. Julius Davis found the end zone for the Bobcats and tallied 8 carries for 40 yards.
Montana State tight end and fullback Derryk Snell was on the receiving end of two Chambers touchdown passes while Clevan Thomas hauled in the other.
Portland State’s starting quarterback Dante Chachere scored twice and had 83 yards rushing on 16 carries. He was 14 of 25 passing for 105 yards and two interceptions.
Brody Grebe forced two fumbles and had two sacks to pace a dominant Bobcat pass rush that sacked Chachere five times. Ryan Ortt and Jon Johnson hauled in the two interceptions for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats are off next week with a bye. Next up is a home matchup with Cal Poly Oct. 14 before a road matchup with fellow Big Sky power Sacramento State Oct. 21.
