Sawyer FG lifts Pirates past ‘Dogs in OT

POLSON — Lucian Sawyer’s 23-yard field goal in overtime lifted the Polson Pirates over Whitefish 29-26 Thursday, in an important Western A football battle.

Sawyer, who also had a 1-yard scoring run that put the Pirates (4-3 overall and in league play) up 26-20 in the fourth quarter, converted his field goal after Whitefish (3-5, 3-4 in league) had the ball first in OT, and failed to score from the 10-yard line.

Holden Emerson ran for two scores for the Pirates, who went for two after Sawyer’s TD but didn’t get it. That left the score 26-19, and Whitefish tied it on Carson Gulick’s second TD run of the game.

Gulick, who ran for 61 yards, also there for 197 yards and two scores, though he was intercepted twice. Mason Kelch had six catches for 73 yards for the Bulldogs.
