Barbara Ruth Mann, 73
Barbara Ruth Barney, 73, born on Dec. 13, 1949, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, passed away peacefully on Sept. 29, 2023, in Western Montana. From the moment Barb graced this earth with her presence, she stood out as a truly unique and extraordinary individual, leaving an indelible mark on the world.
Throughout her life, she held various roles, including daughter (Bill and Ruth), sister (Mike, Diane, and Kim), wife (Don), mother (Jason, and Casey), mother-in-law (Rachel), grandma (Trent, Tom, Logan, Casey, and Joey), and cherished friends (Plethora).
She pursued higher education and earned her teaching degree from the University of North Dakota, which marked the beginning of her lifelong commitment to education.
In June of 1969, Barb married Don Mann. They lived in Grand Forks until the early 80s, when they relocated to western Montana. Upon their arrival in Montana, Barb became an educator in the Evergreen School District, shaping the futures of countless Flathead Valley students.
Her dedication to her students extended beyond the classroom, offering unwavering support and guidance to those in her care. Her love for teaching was evident, and she found joy in her Friday afternoon happy hours with fellow educators, creating lasting memories and bonds that were cherished. It was not a coincidence she passed on a Friday afternoon.
She was a woman of strength and independent thinking. She overcame breast cancer, demonstrating her resilience and tenacity. Her life experiences, combined with her role as a teacher, inspired others to embrace their authentic selves. Those fortunate enough to know her were forever transformed by her direct yet caring nature. She believed in the importance of self-reliance and encouraged others to challenge the word "no" and think for themselves. She never shied away from questioning authority and relentlessly pursued her beliefs.
In accordance with Barbara's wishes, a celebration of her life will be held in the summer of 2024. Her final resting place will be a split between the serene waters of Flathead Lake in Montana and Gull Lake in Minnesota.
Barbara was loved and supported by many, and her absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing her, and her enduring message of self-acceptance and resilience will continue to inspire us all.
