Malyevac medalist in Libby; Polson sweeps team titles
MLIBBY — Reece Malyevac needed to go low to take medalist honors at his home course, and wow did he.
Malyevac fired a 66 Friday, making up a two-stroke deficit on the back nine at Cabinet View Golf Course, to take first among the boys at the Libby Invitational golf tournament. His two-day total of 2-under 141 was two strokes better than Brady Powell of Corvallis.
Powell was up by that margin after the front nine on Friday, but Malyevac opened the back nine eagle-birdie-birdie and added another birdie on 17. He shot 31 coming in to overtake Powell, who fired a 69 Friday.
Polson swept the two-day tournament, which began Thursday at Eureka’s Indian Springs.
Christian Lund (147), Carson Hupka (148) and Hunter Emerson (150) finished 3-4-5 as the Polson boys shot an impressive 593 total, including a blistering 288 on Friday.
The Pirates’ Espn Fisher and Torrin Ellis finished in the top 10. Corvallis was a distant second at 645.
Colin Wade of Corvallis, who shot a tournament-low 74 Thursday, took sixth at 153; Whitefish had two top-15 finishers in Otto Klein and Riley Brown. Columbia Falls’ Winslow Peters finished 14th.
Polson’s girls also cruised to the team title, padding a 21-stroke lead after 18 holes out to 24 at the end.
Ashley Maki (third, 165), Kylee Seifert, Clair Konen and Kila Cannon all finished in the top nine for the Pirates.
Bigfork’s Keni Wade put up dual 80s to take second, eighth strokes behind medalist Katie Lewis of Frenchtown.
Browning’s Brooke Blue and Columbia Falls’ Addy Bowler finished 12-13, and Whitefish golfers Ryhlee Scott and Ava Zignego tied for 15th.
