BILLINGS — With Sam Engellant battling Missoula Sentinel’s Kade McDonough to a first-day draw, the Glacier Wolfpack boys seized the lead after 18 holes of the State AA golf tournament Thursday.

Engellant, a junior, mixed in five birdies with a bogey and a double-bogey for a 70 at Lake Hills Golf Course. Both and McDonough — a senior and the 2020 State AA medalist — started on No. 10 Thursday, made the turn at 36 and played the back at 2-under.

Making a difference for the Pack were Trevor Cunningham and brothers Torren and Tanyon Murray: Torren fired a 72 to sit in fourth, and the trio are all in the top 15 heading into Friday’s round on this same course.

The quartet’s total is 295 strokes, five less than the Spartans’ 300.

Behind McDonough Colin McCarthy shot a 71 for Sentinel and Hudson Goroski came in at 76, and then Gabe Shepard shot 83 to sit in a tie for 30th.

Also sitting in a tie for 30th are Flatghead’s Dylan Morris and Tyler Williams.

With Kenzie Walsh shooting Thursday’s best score of 76, the Billings Senior Broncs took a commanding lead in the girls team race. Four Broncs rank in the top 15 — the top 15 after Friday’s round earn All-State recognition — and have built a 23-stroke lead over Billings West, 325-348.

Glacier’s girls are tied for fifth with Belgrade at 376, three strokes behind Missoula Hellgate.

Chloe Tanner shot 83 Thursday and is tied for ninth.

Hellgate’s Anna Stensrud shot an 80 and is tied for fourth.

Flathead sent three golfers to state, and Payzlee Boyce had the best Thursday with a 103, tying her for 43rd.
