Glacier Gymnastics excels at state meet

BUTTE — Glacier Gymnastics had an excellent showing at the Montana Women’s State Championships March 21-24 at the Butte Civic Center, taking first in one division and second in another.

The Glacier Gymnastics teams were named Gold, Silver and Bronze, with the Gold and Bronze taking second and the Silver team sixth.

A total of 22 gymnasts were first-place medalists and six more were second-place finishers. Fourteen more placed in the top four.

For the Bronze, Zoe Coleman, Aspen Garcia and Violet Donaldson all placed first overall (through four events: vault, beam, bars and floor exercise), and Hannah Souther did the same from the Silver team.

The Gold team’s Makena Hanchett and Lillian Jones were overall champions as well.

Athlon ranks Thompson 8th

Anders Thompson, senior wrestler at Flathead High School, is ranked No. 8 nationally at 190 pounds according to Athlon Sports.  

In its March 29 rankings, the national high school sports-oriented website had Thompson, who just completed a 46-0 season with a State AA title at 205 pounds, ranked a few spots below No. 4 Karson Tompkins. The Texam got the best of Thompson at the Super 32 Challenge in Greensboro, N.C. last October.

Thompson has signed with the Oklahoma Sooners to wrestle collegiately.

Carroll’s Cook, Tech’s Williams All-America picks

HELENA. — The NAIA announced its three men’s basketball All-America teams Monday, just days after the conclusion of the 86th annual NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship, and Andrew Cook of Carroll and Asa Williams from Montana Tech landed honors/

Cook was named a first-team pick after leading Carroll tto the NAIA tournament. The junior was the Frontier Conference player of the year after leading the league in scoring at 20.5 points per game. Cook is the 19th NAIA All-American in Carroll program history, and the sixth to make the first team.

After helping Montana Tech win the Frontier regular season and tournament titles, Williams was named to the third team. A first-team All-Frontier selection, he averaged 16.3 points per game. Williams is the fifth NAIA All-American selection in Montana Tech program history and the Orediggers have now had a player make one of the three teams in three consecutive seasons.

Bobcat coach Logie up for Wazzu job

Matt Logie, who recently led the Montana State men to their third straight NCAA Tournament, is in the running for the head coaching job at Washington State, according to website thefieldof68.com.

Eastern Washington’s David Riley, who led the Eagles to the Big Sky Conference regular-season championship, is also in the running to replace Kyle Smith, who accepted the head coaching job at Stanford on March 25. 

Logie guided the Bobcats to a 14-17 mark in his first season in Bozeman, taking over for Danny Sprinkle, who left last April for Utah State. Sprinkle was recently hired to coach the Washington Huskies.

Riley has gone 62-38 in three seasons at EWU.
