Flathead sweeps crosstown track

Glacier throwers Aiden Krause and Kai Johnson combined to break three Crosstown meet records en route to taking victories in the boys and girls discus and shot put events Tuesday.

Flathead, though, provided some speed and depth.

The Braves (79-66) and Bravettes (75-70) swept the team titles at the annual meet held at Legends Stadium.

The Braves were boosted by a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 meter dash with Ben Bliven taking the victory in 11.06 seconds, followed by Jacob Dolezal (11.34) and Brody Thornsberry (11.36).

Krause came up short of his personal best — which he set with a 192-foot throw Friday in Butte — in the discus, but broke the meet record at 186 feet, one inch. That throw put him 54 feet, one inch ahead of his teammate Dylan Smith, who finished in second.

“I think in warmups he went 198 (feet) and kind of left that little bit on the bone, but he was really consistent,” Glacier boys throwing coach Mark Kessler said.

In the shot put, Krause set a new personal best and meet record with a throw of 54-8.5 — third best in the state in 2024.

“The biggest thing is just getting comfortable,” Kessler said. “He transitioned to spinning, or the South African technique last year and started getting comfortable around state.”

Johnson found herself coming up short of her personal best in the shot put, but still set a meet record with a mark of 39-3. Teammate Madison Terry finished behind Johnson with a 34 feet, three inch throw.

“More practice, working at it and getting better with my feet,” Johnson said on how she is continuing to develop her throws throughout the year.

Johnson took victory in the discus also, with a season best mark of 110-6.

“Kai is just one of those natural athletes,” girls throwing coach Jerry Records said. “She’s just got this natural ability to throw things, and it's been fun to watch.”

Glacier’s Ethan Anderson swept the boys hurdles races, and set a personal best of 14.64 seconds in the 110s.

The Braves also brought home the top three positions in the 1,600 meters with Kasen Kastner pacing the field with a 4:33.63. Followed by Brodyn DeShaw (5:00.80) and Mitchell Johnson (5:09.27).

“It was kind of a struggle running out there alone,” Kastner said. “I wanted to go sub 4:30, but I was just pushing along that who time and I think it was the third lap that really got me. I didn’t have anyone to go with and I think I fell off, I should have pushed harder.”

The Braves relay teams picked up wins in both the 400- and 1,600-meter relays.

The Flathead girls picked up a top three sweep in the 200-meter dash with Tessa Wilson (28.63) leading Naomi Miller (29.01) and Avory Galey (29.39).

Glacier’s girls battled back in the dual taking the top spot in a majority of the field events, with Terry taking the top spot in the Javelin. Teammates Jaidyn Pevey and Sydey Edwards rounding out the top three.

The Wolfpack girls relay teams picked up a pair of wins in the relays..
