State hosts open house in Bigfork ahead of the planned Bridge Street Bridge replacement project
Montana Department of Transportation hosted an open house on Bigfork’s Bridge Street Bridge replacement last month, with the project now slated to begin in early December.
The over 100-year-old bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. An exhibit by Bigfork Art and Cultural Center with help from volunteer and local historian Ed Gillenwater on Nov. 21 displayed old-time photos of the structure, way back to when it was made of wood. First built in 1907 for $2,500, it was replaced with the current steel structure in 1912 after the first road along Swan River from Bigfork to Ferndale was built.
Public comment reinforced the importance of the bridge, which was closed in early 2024 due to structural concerns.
