International Guitar Night celebrates variety of genres

Four artists from Italy, Vietnam, Brazil and Australia have been brought together for the 24th annual International Guitar Night.

From classical guitar to modern fingerstyle, Brazilian guitar and blues, this year’s lineup features Luca Stricagnoli, Thu Le, Marco Pereira and Minnie Marks.

The night starts at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Wachholz College Center located on the Flathead Valley Community College campus.

Hailing from Italy, Stricagnoli is a guitarist known for his innovative fingerstyle techniques and genre-blending musical arrangements. Stricagnoli’s “jaw-dropping virtuosity” includes playing up to five guitars at the same time. His repertoire, performed on double and triple neck guitars he designed, includes a blend of popular songs from contemporary rock, film scores and originals earning him millions of views on YouTube.

Born in Hanoi, Vietnam, Thu Le’s love affair with the guitar began at the age of 4, thanks to her father. She entered the National Conservatory of Music in Hanoi at 7, one of the youngest ever students admitted, according to a press release. Her passion led her to perform critically acclaimed solo concerts worldwide. In addition to playing music reflecting her cultural roots in Vietnam, she includes classic and contemporary composers in her repertoire. One special piece she plays was composed for her by Sergio Assad in memory of her father, Lới Lơ. She currently resides in Bahrain.

Marco Pereira, a classical Brazilian guitarist, is described as a “living legend,” by International Guitar Night organizers. He has worked with superstars such as Gal Costa, Milton Nascimento, Tom Jobim and countless others. Through his exquisite interpretations and solo performances, he contributed significantly to the global appreciation of Brazilian guitar music.

“Pereira’s original compositions are considered modern masterpieces for classical guitar. And his performances are marked by their emotional depth and technical brilliance,” according to the press release.

From winning the Bluesfest Busking Competition in 2011 to earning the winning place of Best Guitarist at the Open Arms Festival competition, it’s safe to say Marks is a dynamic force in Australian music. 

“She’s an exploding powerhouse of guitar talent and energy with a fearless approach to performance that includes accompanying herself on drums while playing guitar.”

Through her unique style of effortlessly blending blues, rock and roots music, she has gained a following around the world.

“Anticipation is high as we prepare to immerse our audience in a night of extraordinary performances that showcase the unparalleled beauty and diversity of the guitar's global language,” said Matt Laughlin, director of the Wachholz College Center.
