Dewey skins, slides to Whitefish Whiteout victory

Cutting through the fog like a warm knife in butter, Jacob Dewey claimed the top of the podium in the annual Whitefish Whiteout skimo race Saturday at Whitefish Mountain Resort.

The 24-year-old completed the grueling long course in 1:47:37, outpacing runner-up Ian Clarke, 25, who crossed the finish atop Big Mountain at 1:48:24. Noah Brown placed third at 1:48:30.

Dewey led from the start, skinning up the Benny Up route in 23:44.

On the women’s side, 38-year-old Maria Lamb placed first with a time of 1:58:26. Gwendolyn Rudy was second at 2:01:28, and Chelsee Pummel was third at 2:06:11.

The long course took racers up Benny Up, into Hellroaring Basin, down and up Haskill, and finished with a bootpack up NBC on East Rim to the summit.

The men’s masters division had a nail-biter finish with Montana endurance athletes Matt Seeley holding off Joel Shehan. Seeley, 53, crossed at 1:59:03, with Shehan, 45, just behind at 2:00:59. Always in the mix, Chance Cooke, 57, placed third at 2:01:32.

Whitefish resident Stella Hobbs, 30, won the 20-44 female category, finishing at 2:06:44. On the male side, Christopher Carter, 34, won the category at 1:49:44.
