Pauline Martinez, 95

| January 17, 2024 12:00 AM

Pauline Martinez was born Feb. 2, 1928, and died Jan. 10, 2024.

As a garden enthusiast Pauline was always planning the care of her crops, aware of the seasons and planning for next year’s harvest. Getting her hands in the soil, working with the earth, had been a source of joy for her. Even in the sandy 29 Palms desert soil, where she built a home with her own hands, she planted and tended a garden. Gardening, getting outdoors, walking and camping with Camping Women of America had been passions that kept her happy and healthy

A native of Pennsylvania, Pauline shared tales of her Colver hometown, recounting childhood adventures in the woods with her large Italian family. Memories of swinging by vines and swimming in creeks painted a vivid picture of her youth. Colver was the site of memories always alive for Mom.

Pauline’s three sons carry the affectionate guilt of not fulfilling her wish for a baby girl. Yet, her unconditional love for each of them overshadowed any fleeting desire. From building her first home to be nearby, to spoiling them with whatever she could supply, she devoted herself to her sons, a gesture born from love rather than obligation.

She built a home in California’s high desert, a haven where battles with wild jackrabbits over lettuce leaves became cherished memories. Then a move to Montana marked a new chapter, fostering deeper connections with family. Her love for gardening flourished amid the beauty of Montana, intertwining with a newfound bond with her granddaughter and strengthening ties with her daughter-in-law and son Steve.

Pauline embraced life with a generous heart, forming friendships that brought her immense joy and love. Her self-sufficiency and independence framed a mischievous character always ready for a bit of adventure. For Pauline, food was more than sustenance; it was a form of love, healing, and a carrier of cherished family memories.

As the youngest daughter among nine siblings, Pauline leaves behind a legacy as a devoted mother and a proud, loving grandmother. She is survived by her brother Renaldo, sons Steven, Paul and Peter, daughters-in-law Susan, Ann and Renée, granddaughter Renée, and numerous nephews and nieces.

A spring graveside memorial will be arranged. Please send condolences to montanacahill@yahoo.com.

May her memory be a source of comfort and inspiration.
