Late Boise rally downs Range Riders Wednesday
Tyler Jorgensen hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth, Troy Viola jacked a three-run homer in the ninth and the Boise Hawks beat the Glacier Range Riders 6-1 in Pioneer League baseball Wednesday night.
The loss dropped the Range Riders to 1-6 this half, though the hosts owned a 1-0 lead for most of the evening at Glacier Bank Park.
The run came via a bases-loaded grounder from Chad Castillo that scored Gabe Howell in the first inning. The Range Riders failed to score again and the 6-2 Hawks — whose overall record is now 30-25, same as Glacier’s — broke through on relievers Cameron Crow and Jerome Huntzinger in the late innings.
Cooper Benson had an excellent start on the mound for the Range Riders: six innings with three hits and two walks allowed. He fanned six. Luke Cooper threw a scoreless seventh inning as well. Then Boise piled up six runs off six hits and three walks in the final two innings.
Viola’s home run was his 14th of the season. Howell and Andy Atwood each had two hits at the top of the order for Glacier, and Howell stole a base.
The teams continued their six-game series Thursday night. The game had not ended at press time.
