Her early childhood years were spent in Somers, where she lived until the eighth grade. In 1949, her family moved to Winchester, Idaho, where she spent her high school years, graduating in 1953.

After high school, Marilyn moved to Spokane, Washington, and attended Whitworth College and Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated with her nursing diploma in 1957 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Whitworth in 1958.
