| May 8, 2024 12:00 AM

Sharon McLeod-Askelson, 79, fondly known as "The Rose Gal," passed away on April 27, 2024, following a valiant five-year battle with cancer. She was born on March 19, 1945, in Kalispell. Sharon's life was a testament to resilience, passion, and dedication.

Her journey began in Kalispell, where she attended Russell Elementary School and later graduated from Flathead High School in 1963. During her formative years, Sharon exhibited a strong work ethic, taking on various jobs including roles in the school cafeteria, at Torbert’s Variety Store, and Sears and Roebuck. Her pursuit of education led her to Kidman Business School in Spokane before returning to Kalispell to work for Jordahl & Sliter CPA.

In 1966, Sharon's life took a beautiful turn when she married Joe Askelson, with whom she shared many years of companionship and hard work until Joe's passing in 1994.

Sharon's true passion, however, blossomed in the early 70s when she discovered her love for growing and arranging roses. She became a member of the National Rose Society and served as President of the Local Rose Society. Her dedication to the art of roses led her to attend numerous National Rose Conventions.

In addition to her love for roses, Sharon was an active member of the Artist & Craftsmen of the Flathead for three decades, diligently serving as their Treasurer. Her commitment extended to the Dahlia Society, where she also held the role of Treasurer for many years, leaving an indelible mark on both organizations.

Her talents were not confined to societies and conventions; she was a regular participant in The Northwest Montana Fair for over 50 years, earning the title of Exhibitor of The Year for six years, a testament to her skill and dedication.

As Sharon transitions to heaven's rose garden, she leaves behind cherished memories. She is reunited with loved ones who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sister, Gloria Smith; sister-in-law, Marolyn McLeod; and several nieces, and nephews.

A celebration of Sharon's life will be held to honor her memory, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, at the Flathead County Fairgrounds-Country Kitchen Building.
