Lions Lytle, Johnson run over Scotties
GLASGOW — Rogan Lytle scored two touchdowns, one off a fumble return, and Haiden Johnson found the end zone three times Saturday as Eureka downed Glasgow 35-14 in a Class B first-round playoff game.
Eureka, 8-2, advanced to a quarterfinal game at unbeaten Manhattan (10-0) next Saturday thanks to 406 rushing yards and two big fumble recoveries.
The first turnover came as Glasgow (7-3) drove into the red zone trying to break a 7-7 deadlock. As Scotties running back Wyatt Sugg crossed the 10-yard line the Lions’ Jesse Day popped the ball loose and Eureka recovered at its 5 with 4:22 left in the first half.
Lytle then guided his team on a 95-yard drive in which he had three runs of 11 yards and another that netted 15. He capped the march with a 1-yard sneak with 17 seconds left in the half. Eureka led 14-7 at blustery Scottie Field.
“We were able to run the ball pretty well against them,” Lions coach Trevor Utter said. “It wasn’t a passing game, but we like to pound the rock.”
Eureka got a 51-yard touchdown burst from Johnson on its first drive of the third quarter, and then disaster struck for Glasgow: Khye Gamas’ errant option pitch was scooped up by Lytle, who ran 33 yards for the Lions’ second TD in 28 seconds. It was 27-7 at 10:35 of the third quarter.
Gamas, who hit Wyatt Babb with a 10-yard TD pass to put the Scotties up 7-0, added a 1-yard TD run to cut the gap to 27-14 at 5:40 of the third quarter.
Eureka came right back with a 68-yard run by Johnson, who picked up 210 yards on 17 carries. He scored the Lions’ first TD from 3 yards out.
Lytle ran 19 times for 152 yards and was 3 of 9 passing for 36 yards.
Gamas threw for 178 on 12 of 28 passing. Gamas also had 71 rushing yards, though he was sacked three times.
Babb, Glasgow’s 6-foot-4 receiver, had five catches for 42 yards.
