Authorities step up patrols to deter drunk driving during holiday season

Local and state law enforcement agencies are stepping up patrols in the Kalispell area during the holiday season to tamp down on drunk driving, authorities say.

The effort began Nov. 25, according to a press release issued by the Kalispell Police Department in conjunction with the Montana Department of Transportation. Officials urged residents to plan accordingly while enjoying the seasonal festivities. 

"Celebrating the holiday season responsibly with family and friends means planning ahead for a sober ride,'" said Col. Kurt Sager of the Montana Highway Patrol in a statement. "State and local law enforcement will be increasing patrols statewide during this holiday season so we all can return home safely."

In 2022, 32% of drivers involved in fatal crashes in Montana were drinking, authorities said. Montana is home to one of the nation's highest fatality rates for the number of deaths caused by impaired drivers per vehicle mile traveled. 

The heightened patrols, which will run through New Year's Day, are meant to deter would-be intoxicated motorists, officials said. 

"Plan ahead, and if you're impaired, don't drive," said Sager. "If you are with someone who is impaired, help them make the right decision to not drive impaired. Let's all work together to keep our communities safe."

Authorities recommended residents designate a sober driver before any event involving alcohol, use ride-sharing services or public transportation where available, and host events responsibly and avoid overserving guests. They also encouraged hosts to ensure guests line up a safe ride home.
