Wolfpack comeback topples Hellgate girls
Gracie Winkler’s 35-yard shot capped a remarkable second-half comeback for the Glacier Wolfpack Saturday, in a 3-2 girls soccer win over Missoula Hellgate at the Glacier fields.
Neve Travis had brought the Wolfpack (5-3-2) into a 1-1 tie in the 63rd minute, knocking in the rebound of a penalty kick; after the Knights (7-2-1) got back in front six minutes later, Glacier got going.
Lucy Holloway scored in the 80th minute and Winkler tallied in the final minute of regulation.
“Big win for our young squad,” Glacier coach Doug Mello said. “Our tying goal was with under 10 minutes left on a beautiful set piece from Emmery Schmit, who put the cross on a dime to Lucy Holloway, to head home.
“With 30 seconds remaining Neve Travis slotted a through ball to Gracie Winkler who prep touched it to her deadly right foot who then crushed a 35-yard rocket into the top left corner of the net.”
It was a landmark win: Hellgate had won seven straight meetings with Glacier (5-3-2) before the teams played to a 1-1 draw earlier this season. Hailey Burke made nine saves.
“0ur whole defensive line and keeper deserve a lot of credit for stifling a talented Hellgate team,” Mello said.
