| October 10, 2024 12:00 AM

Renowned Cuban-American cellist Tommy Mesa joins the Glacier Symphony orchestra for an unforgettable evening of enchanting music at the Wachholz College Center on Oct. 12 and Oct. 13.

This captivating concert promises to be an extraordinary musical experience, blending innovation and timeless storytelling, according to organizers.

Messa is the recipient of the Sphinx Organization’s 2023 Medal of Excellence, its highest honor. He has appeared as a soloist at the U.S. Supreme Court on four occasions and with major orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, The Cleveland Orchestra and The Philadelphia Orchestra.

The evening opens with the Glacier Symphony Orchestra performing Paul Dukas' beloved “Sorcerer's Apprentice,” a piece made famous by its unforgettable appearance in Walt Disney's “Fantasia.”

Following this magical introduction, Mesa will take center stage to perform two remarkable works: Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33, and Dvořák's lyrical Silent Woods for cello and orchestra. The night will culminate with the orchestra’s powerful performance of Hector Berlioz’s “Symphonie Fantastique,” a revolutionary work renowned for its daring originality and rich emotional depth.

In addition to the main concert, Glacier Symphony invites patrons to an exclusive soirée the evening before at a private home on Big Mountain, where Mesa will perform a specially curated selection of music in an intimate setting. Thirty guests will enjoy the chance to meet this world-class artist, experience culinary delights from chef Star Ironside, and tour the historic mansion. The soiree is taking place on Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. and an address will be provided to attendees.

Mesa will also inspire the next generation of music lovers by performing a Wild About Music concert for over 300 students from the local area. This educational performance will take place on Oct. 11 at 10 a.m. at the Wachholz College Center, offering students an opportunity to experience classical music in the same dynamic and engaging environment as Glacier Symphony Orchestra and Chorale’s concerts.
