Drama horror film ‘Freaks’ screens for Movie Night at the Museum

The Northwest Montana History Museum presents the 1932 classic horror film “Freaks” at 7 p.m. Oct 22.

The film tells the story of circus trapeze artist Cleopatra, who is already involved with another circus performer but initiates a relationship with Hans, who works in the sideshow. It’s not Hans whom Cleopatra is attracted to, but the money she knows he will inherit. At first, all goes as planned, but when a drunken Cleopatra reveals her true intent, the sideshow performers take revenge on behalf of their friend.

“Freaks” was produced and directed by Tod Browning and stars Wallace Ford, Leila Hyams, Olga Baclanova, Roscoe Ates, and Harry Earles. While the film was a box-office failure when first released, it was revived in the 1960s as a Hollywood classic and was featured at the 1962 Venice Film Festival.

The film became a cult classic and was selected in 1994 for preservation by the United States Film Registry, which preserves films that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the museum, 124 Second Ave. E. in Kalispell. Admission and popcorn are free, but donations are accepted to help defray the costs of Movie Night. Soda, water, beer, and wine are available for purchase. Seating is provided, but viewers are welcome to bring cushions or seating.
