Connie Kao, 88
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Connie Kao, 88, of Kalispell. She passed away peacefully Aug. 24, 2024, at home with her husband by her side.
She was born Aug. 7, 1936, in a little house on the east side of Kalispell, to Fritz and Ruth Sunde. She attended Flathead High School. There is where she met her husband, Glen Kao, as he was one of the only ones at the time who had a vehicle and could give rides to favorite destinations. They went on to marry Jan. 23, 1954. They were able to celebrate their 70th anniversary this year surrounded by many family and friends.
Together they had four children, Mike, Mitzi, Valerie and Marcie. The family lived in Kalispell and enjoyed many adventures hiking and camping. During this time, they met lifelong friends Gary and Lorrie Fischer. The Fischers brought joy to all stages of life, from working together, raising children together and then after retirement, traveling. Connie started part-time work after the children were all in school as a cashier at the restaurant at B&B. She then moved across the street to become the manager of the State Liquor Store until she retired.
Retirement allowed time for travel, but most importantly, time to be a devoted grandmother. This was the true work of her heart and was a role in which she passionately thrived. Connie and Glen loved taking many generations of kids and then grandkids camping at their beloved spot at Bitterroot Lake. Babysitting grandkids was a cherished activity, and their home easily became a favorite place for grandkids to play. Her proudest accomplishment may have been devoting herself to her eight grandkids, 17 great-grandkids and two great-great-grandkids. Many will always remember grandma’s raspberry jam, her Christmas Eve meatballs, and seeing her cheer them on from the stands of any sporting event or their other performances. Her legacy of kindness, compassion, and grace will continue to inspire and guide those lucky enough to call her grandma.
Sewing and knitting were other hobbies she enjoyed. Over the years she created hundreds of quilts and made an effort to ensure that all family members had one uniquely made just for them. Along with her husband, she was a devout member of Central Christian Church where she enjoyed her faith and being part of the congregation.
Preceding her in joining the Lord were her parents; brother Tracy; son Mike; and grandson David.
She is survived by her husband of seventy years, Glen; brother Bill (Resi); daughters, Mitzi Yerkes (Butch), Valerie Kao (Kay), and Marcie Christenson (Kevin); grandchildren; and countless other relatives.
As we work through this loss, we find solace in knowing that her spirit lives on through the many family traditions that she proudly preserved and the eternal love that she instilled in all those around her. A memorial service will be held at the Central Christian Church on Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. With a private family burial at a later time.
