Mellott, Bobcats cruise past Utah Tech
ST. GEORGE, Utah — Tommy Mellott rushed for two touchdowns and threw for one more as the Montana State Bobcats defeated Utah Tech 31-7 Saturday.
The Bobcats (2-0) rushed for 329 yards on 56 attempts and outgained the Trailblazers (0-1) 481-176 in the game.
Mellott threw for 152 yards and rushed for 71 more. Scottre Humphrey led Montana State with 107 yards on the ground, redshirt freshman Adam Jones — who rushed for a 93-yard score against New Mexico a week ago — carried for 51 yards.
Jones run opened the scoring with a 17-yard scamper with 2:35 left in the first quarter.
A 47-yard Mellott run in the second quarter made it 14-0 Bobcats into the half.
Mellott found Rohan Jones early in the third to extend the lead to 21-0.
Mellott found paydirt again in the fourth, this time from one yard out to make it 31-0.
Deacon Hill got the Trailblazers on the board a minute later with a 24-yard carry, but Utah Tech couldn’t get any closer as Montana State earned their second win in as many weeks.
The Bobcats now head home for their annual Gold Rush game against Maine Saturday at 7 p.m.
