Wolfpack Theatre Company digs into ‘Holes' with mysterious adventure
There is no lake at Camp Green Lake, but there are an awful lot of holes.
Wolfpack Theatre Company brings the mysterious family-friendly adventure, “Holes,” to the stage at Glacier High School Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and 2.
Stanley Yelnats can’t catch a break. Born into a family cursed with bad luck, it comes as no surprise when he finds himself accused of a crime he didn’t commit. When a judge sentences him to Camp Green Lake, Stanley soon learns the camp’s condition is far from green and there’s certainly no lake. He and the other campers are forced to dig holes in the scorching Texas sun as a “character-building” exercise. Little do they know that they are doing the warden’s dirty work for her — digging for buried treasure linked to the notorious outlaw, Kissin’ Kate Barlow. As Stanley digs, he uncovers connections to a mysterious family curse that has plagued his ancestors for generations.
The narrative, which is based on the award-winning young adult novel by Louis Sachar, weaves between present-day events and flashbacks to the 1800s, revealing the story of the Kissin' Kate Barlow and the origins of the Yelnats family curse that began with Stanley’s “no good, dirty rotten, pig stealin’, great-great-grandfather.” But with the help of his friend, Zero, some lizards, and characters of the past and the present, Stanley navigates challenges, uncovers secrets, and ultimately seeks to prove his innocence and restore his family’s honor along the way.
“This is a story about family and accepting your family through a childlike adventure,” said director Greg Adkins. “It is a great reminder of the importance of our own families no matter what our families may look like.”
