Glacier Symphony performs Beethoven’s complex ‘Missa Solemnis’

| April 10, 2025 12:00 AM

Glacier Symphony and Chorale is set to perform what Beethoven considered his greatest composition, "Missa Solemnis (Solemn Mass),” April 12 and 13.

“Beethoven’s ‘Missa Solemnis’ is one of the greatest choral symphonic works of all time, a riveting and dynamic 'sacred symphony' combining the liturgical Latin Mass with unrelenting symphonic expression that could only be created by Beethoven.  A remarkable work that one must experience in concert,” Glacier Symphony Maestro John Zoltek said.

“Missa Solemnis” debuted in 1824, the same year as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.  The two works were companion pieces, shedding light on Beethoven’s spiritual worldview — where “Ode to Joy” in the Ninth Symphony was a hymn to humanity — "Missa Solemnis” was a hymn to God.

The sheer difficulty of the work requires a superhuman effort on the part of the chorale and the power of the work lies in the struggle and the joy of overcoming the obstacles, according to a press release.

The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 12 and at 3 p.m. April 13, in McClaren Hall at the Wachholz College Center, 795 Grandview Dr., Kalispell.

Tickets are $74 for adults, $25 for students and children 17 and under are free. Cost includes ticket service fees. Tickets may be purchased at  www.glaciersymphony.com. For more information call 407-7000.
