Wildcats run, throw to Iceberg title
COLUMBIA FALLS — Jack Phelps liked running on his home track Thursday.
The senior swept the boys 200 and 400 sprints and helped the host Columbia Falls boys win the Iceberg Invitational track and field meet.
It was a narrow victory: The Wildcats scored 122 points to 120 for Frenchtown and 75 for Ronan.
That two-point margin could have come from several directions, including Lucas Peterson’s win in the 3,200 meters, or Lane Voerman’s win in the discus — where he threw an all class-best 172 feet, 2 inches.
Or we could just stick with Phelps, whose 200 time of 22.57 seconds ranks second in Class A; he also PR’d in the 400 with a time of 50.36, a top-three time in the class.
The throws were a major highlight, because both Voermans and Polson’s Astin Brown PR’d twice Thursday. Brown was second in the discus with a heave of 165-5. Those two have the two top throws in Class A.
Brown also became the first Montanan to go 60 feet in the shot — and then some. He marked 60-10.5, and Voerman’s PR of 54-6.5 was good for second. Brown, Voermans and Frenchtown’s Tanner Waldron (52-9 Thursday) sit 1-2-3 in Class A.
Oliver Kress and Isak Soyland also went 1-2 in the pole vault for the Wildcats.
Simon Douglas won the 800 for Whitefish.\, and teammate Carson Gulick won the 110 hurdles.
Eureka’s boys got wins from Cole Sartori (800) and Jesse Day (javelin). Day’s PR of 176-1 ties him for best in Class B.
Frenchtown flipped the script on the girls side, scoring 119 points to 116 for the Kats. Stevensville was next at 65, and Whitefish was fourth with 57.
Sprinters Heather Haskins and Shea Gooden, who went 1-2 in the 200, and freshman thrower Alexa Madland helped the Broncs prevail. Whitefish’s Rachael Wilmot won the other two sprints.
Libby freshman Capri Farmer was a double-winner, taking the 800 and 1,600.
Aubrey Smith (100 hurdles) and Cora Hannan (300 hurdles) supplied wins to help the Wildkats keep pace; Soli Bullemer hit a PR of 11-1 to win the pole vault and Taryn Borgen won the high jump as well.
Bullemer’s height was one inch higher than she went Tuesday night in Corvallis; she remains No. 3 in Class A and the state.
C-Falls second, third at Twilight Meet
In Corvallis Tuesday evening, Columbia Falls’ boys finished second to the host Blue Devils and the girls were third at the six-team Sapphire Twilight Meet
Dillon won the girls meet with 145 points; Hamilton nudged the Wildkats to third, 109.5-106. Corvallis ran away with the boys title, scoring 192 points to 123 for Columbia Falls.
The Wildcats’ Miles Collander and Hamilton’s long relay kept Corvallis from winning every timed event: Collander won the 300 hurdles in 42.39 seconds. The Wildcats’ finished second in the long relay with a time of 3:33.05, and that ranks No. 3 in Class A.
Polson’s Brown won the shot put and discus.
The Pirates’ David DiGiallonardo ran the second-best 1,600 in Class A, 4:30.25; running the No. 1 time was event winner Jack Davison of Corvallis (4:28.15).
Wildcats Oliver Kress (13 feet, 9 inches, a PR and the No. 2 height in Class A), Isak Soyland and Trip Ross finished 1-2-3 in the pole vault, and Soyland added a win in the long jump.
Easton Brooks marked 40-2.5 to win the triple jump for Columbia Falls as well.
On the girls’ side, Dillon picked up big points with 1-2-3 finishes in both hurdles races, as well as a 1-through-4 finish in the discus.
Columbia Falls got nice points from Bullemer (second in the pole vault at 11-0, second in the triple jump) and Taryn Borgen (second in the high jump, third in the long jump).
Polson saw sophomore Morgan Delaney win the 1,600 and Keilyn Nelson take the 400.
